A little bit about me:
Nature, camping, music and movement have been a big part of my life since I can remember. I’m an animal, plant and people lover. In 2005, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and found family, community and my three cats to be an essential support for healing. My passion is to help people live full, healthy and balanced lives as well as respect and value themselves, one another and the world we live in.
A little bit about my education and professional background:
I hold a master’s degree in Counseling from Portland State University, a master’s degree in Human Movement from Boston University and is a National Certified Counselor. I’ve been a social worker for 9 years, providing individual and family therapy. Prior to receiving my masters degree in Social Work, I worked for over 15 years in a variety of communities in a number of roles, advocating for people experiencing marginalization, including homelessness, domestic violence, and developmental disabilities. I am passionate about combining the healing methods of yoga and meditation with mental health care. I received my 200 yoga alliance teacher training certificate at Sellwood Yoga in early 2018, which included training in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). Since, I have explored continuing education and training in yin yoga (With Bernie Clark), restorative yoga and yoga nidra (IRest Level 1 certification), as well as Reiki I certification. I am currently enrolled in an 800 hour yoga therapy program and working toward Level 2 certification in IREST yoga nidra.
My approach is holistic and embodies a deep appreciation for the uniqueness of each and every individual. Healing can be enhanced by integrating mind, body, and spirit. Therefore, I hold relevant all aspects of an individual's life and how those aspects are interconnected. My approach is based in mindfulness and is informed by both western philosophies and practices (DBT, CBT and ACT) as well as eastern philosophies and practices (Yoga, Meditation, Breath Work, and Reiki). Additionally, I practice through a lens and with a perspective that is trauma informed, person centered, strength based and culturally responsive. My commitment is to support the people I get the opportunity to work with in living lives that are more meaningful, enriching and nourishing - feeling better, while also living better. I provide a warm, genuine, collaborative and validating environment in which your life story can safely be explored. I believe that the essence of true wellness and optimal health lies with the relationship that we have with ourselves and our ability to forgive, accept and love every part, the dark and the light .
Finding the right therapist, one with whom you feel comfortable, can trust and who can understand and accept without judgement your unique journey and struggle is essential if therapy is going to be helpful and useful. My hope is to be a compassionate listener, witness and guide for you, who accepts you unconditionally and offers a safe space and container to explore your hopes, needs and desired changes from a place of self-actualization and realization, empowering you to be your own healer. We can explore thinking and behavior patterns as well as difficult emotions and body sensations that get in the way of acting in accordance with your values and expressing your true self. We can explore the positive elements that exist within you already and how to expand the strength and beauty you already hold and have, but that may just be dormant or stuck. If you have questions or would like to talk, please feel free to contact me or schedule a free consultation.
In addition to therapy, I also teach public and private yoga classes @ Elk Rock Yoga.
I hope that we get to meet, that our paths will cross, in one way or another, sometime soon!
